View Full Version : Whats you're comfort range?
Howdy all. My instructor and I were discussing ranges last night. Im more comfortable fighting in close (punches not requiring a step in/ elbows/ knees) as opposed to far back. I would tend to go in rather than back if I needed to adjust distance. However, I know that some people would rather stay as far out as possible. For a step in to be needed to punch. Now I will be the first to say...
1; My experience in MA's is pretty limited.
2; My experience in sparring is VERY limited.
because of these things, my views may change overy time, which is fine with me if other things work better.
So, wheres your comfort zone? Why? Do you spar better in one range than another? Why?

I like the fighting measure where you opponent has to take a sept forward to hit or kick you.

Half kidding, I'd say my comfort zone is just about at the horizon line
I like sparing at about a half a step out of their range of a kick until I see if they are any good at kicking, Then it moves to just out of their arm range when I can reach them quickly if they try to step in for a hit.
If they are a good striker I like to close in tight and jam them up when my knees, bows and head work well. They usually don't like not being at optimum power range for themselves and have problems getting any power in tight.
If they are a grappler I try to keep them at kicking range and get them to try charging and get them on the half step with a kick. If they try to shoot under for legs I'd stiff arm them down, palm to the top of the head, or a good old eye poke as I move off their center line.
I guess really my comfort range is actually where my opponents DIS-comport range is at, if that makes sence. I want to exploit the opponent not set a fixed comfort zone for myself that they can exploit.

Being from the knock'em DownNStomp'em school of judo I tend to be at home in grappling range.
Home, home on the range...
